Celebrate Hawaii’s Flag – Kaloko-Honokohau National Park

This Saturday, July 31st, Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park will present a special program entitled La Ho`i Ho`i Ea. This is to commemorate the day that independence was restored to Hawai’i from the British occupation in 1843. The park will host this free event from 10am – 2:30pm at the visitors center. There will be entertainment, cultural demonstrations, and keiki activities. Learn about the history of the Hawai’i state flag and the history of Hawai’i.

you’re probably acquainted already with the (British) Admiral Thomas’ story. While Admiral Thomas was away in England, his second-in-command overthrew the Hawaii gov’t. When Admiral Thomas returned he restored the gov’t. He actually marched up to what is known today as Thomas Square Park across the street from the Honolulu Academy of Arts and re-raised the Hawaiian flag. You’ll recognize the union jack in the canton (upper left-hand sector) of the Hawaiian flag.
