The Ocean View Post Office is moving from it’s current location on Pohue Plaza to a new slightly larger space next to Ocean View Market on Lotus Blossom.

The contractors are hard at work getting the boxes moved to the new location. The new post office will open on Tuesday, Jan 18th. The new post office will transition from an official post office to a contract post office, but business should continue as usual. I will miss the current postal workers. They have become my friends over the last 8 months. Hopefully, we’ll be able to make even more friend with the new workers. I’ll post an update of the new facility once it opens on Tuesday.

Today, I spent an hour starting to build a mala ‘ai, or food garden. Our mala ‘ai will be modeled off one that I saw a Kaloko-Honokohau. We were able to get the shape laid out, and a few layers piled up. Hopefully, we’ll be able to get it finished over the next few days.
This particular one will probably hold our ‘uala, or sweet potato, plants. I’m hoping to build two more to round out the front of the house, and fill them with taro. This style of gardening will help protect the plants from the wind, and uses a very abundant building material, lava rocks.

The County of Hawaii has petitioned for an EIS exemption for the placement of a temporary garbage bin to be placed on a 20×30 foot pad located on a small parcel of unused county land. The pad has already been poured, and is located behind Kahuku Park on Paradise Makai. The bin will be manned one morning a week, with the bin being taken to a local transfer station in the afternoon.
This small addition would be a definite improvement to help relieve waste in Ocean View. Although, recyclable items will still need to be taken to other transfer stations this bin would be a welcome addition to the community services offered in Ocean View.
